Unidentified gunmen have shot dead senior Haqqani Network leader Dr. Naseer Haqqani near the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, local media reported on Monday.

Dr. Naseer came under attack late Sunday in Barakau, an area in the outskirts of Islamabad, leaders of the group said.

Geo TV reported the gunmen, riding a motorcycle, sprayed bullets at Dr. Naseer when he was returning home from mosque.

"The dead body has been sent to Miranshah for burial later in the evening," a former Haqqani Network official said.

Dr. Naseer had been mainly involved in the fund-raising, logistic and political affairs of the group.
