The western Japanese commercial city of Osaka decided on Wednesday to donate one million yen (about 10, 048 U.S. dollars) towards relief efforts in the Philippines hit by Typhoon Haiyan last week, city officials announced.

A spokesperson for the city told Xinhua that the decision was made on Wednesday afternoon, and Toru Hashimoto, the mayor of Osaka, also told reporters that in addition to the cash contribution, the city is considering dispatching personnel and equipment to help communities devastated by the storm.

"Although our city has a limited ability to assist hundreds of thousands of people homeless there, we stand ready to further assist the Philippine government's relief and recovery efforts," he said.
