The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) said Wednesday that it will offer its strongest support in the work of recovery in typhoon-ravaged Philippines.

"The Association will offer its strongest support in the work of recovery and in restoring hope and confidence to the people of our community who have experienced such terrible personal loss", said an ASEAN chairman statement on the impact of typhoon Haiyan on the Philippines.

The statement said the ASEAN member states "wish to express their heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to the government and people of the Republic of the Philippines following the devastating impact of Typhoon Haiyan."

In his capacity as ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance Coordinator, ASEAN Secretary-General Le Luong Minh has contacted the Philippines Secretary of Foreign Affairs Albert Del Rosario and informed the latter that he is ready to facilitate ASEAN cooperation and coordination through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management.

"As our Secretary-General coordinates ASEAN's humanitarian assistance and response, we reaffirm our commitment to the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response of 2005 and to the safety and welfare of the people we represent, especially during such times of extreme suffering", said the statement.

The international donations and supplies are being flown in the worst-hit Tacloban in central Philippines.
