At least three people were killed and many others injured in a gun and grenade attack at an anti- government rally site in capital Bangkok early Thursday.

M-79 grenades were thrown at the rally site near the Democracy Monument and an M16 assault rifle was also used in the attack, the Nation newspaper quoted the police as saying.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Erawan Emergency Medical Center said that 24 were wounded in the attack and then were rushed to hospitals. Three were later pronounced dead and 11 are still being treated in hospitals.

Three M-79 grenades landed on the roof of a nearby hotel, injuring an undisclosed number of people, police said.

Later in the morning, protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban leading a number of his followers stormed into the Royal Thai Air Force auditorium where the Election Commission was negotiating with the caretaker government on specifics of the next general election and forced the meeting to be aborted.
