A wooden boat with 60 people on board capsized in Kapuas river in Central Kalimantan on Tuesday, killing 12 people and leaving 6 missing, rescuers disclosed.

The accident took place when the boat was just departing from Panamas village and heading to Kualakapuas at 9:15 a.m. local time, Wasino, operational head of Central Kalimantan Search and Rescue Office said.

"After leaving the port for about 100 meters, the boat began to leak and the engine to pump the water did not function, that led the boat capsized," he told Xinhua by phone from the scene, citing 42 others who have been rescued. "Twelve corpses have been found and the other six remain missing, " Wasino said.

Local rescuers, soldiers, police and volunteers had searched for the missing and the operation stopped at 17:30 p.m. local time, and it will resume at 5:00 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

Boats are favorite transport means in Indonesia due to low costs, but lack of safety has often incurred fatal accidents.
