Michelle Obama, the spouse of President of the United States Barack Obama, arrived here on Friday evening for a three-day visit, the first to the country by a sitting U.S. first lady.

The first lady, who alighted from a U.S. government plane at Siem Reap International Airport, was cordially welcomed by Bun Rany, the wife of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, and Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron as well as other dignitaries.

Michelle made the historic visit to Cambodia to promote her new "Let Girls Learn" global education initiative to Cambodian girls, according to a statement released by the White House.

During her visit in Siem Reap province, the home of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Angkor Wat Temple, Michelle and Bun Rany will have a Two First Ladies' talk before meeting with Cambodian high school students, the statement said.

Then she will deliver remarks to Peace Corps Volunteers participating in a girls' education training event that is part of "Let Girls Learn," it added. Finally the first lady will visit Angkor Wat Temple.

Cambodia is Michelle's second leg of a two-Asian nation trip, which had already brought her to Japan, a partner in the "Let Girls Learn" initiative.
