Japan's economy contracted at an annualized rate of 2.5 percent in the July-September quarter, the government said in a revised report on Monday.

The latest figures from the Cabinet Office show the reading has been revised down from a preliminary 1.2 percent contraction.

Initially, a drop in capital expenditure was blamed for the world's third-largest economy shrinking.

The revised data, however, adds the negative impact of a string of natural disasters, including a powerful earthquake and viscous typhoons in the third quarter of 2018.

The contraction in the reporting period, in real gross domestic product, which means the total value of goods and services produced in the country and adjusted for inflation, equals a 0.6 percent drop from the April-June quarter, the Cabinet Office said.
