Spanish Defense Minister Pedro Morenes on Monday made a surprise visit to Spanish troops stationed in Afghanistan.
Morenes, who took office less than a month ago, set off from the military airbase in Torrejon, just outside of Madrid on Sunday night to visit the bases at Herat, where around 500 military personnel are stationed, and Qala I Naw, which hosts the majority of the Spanish military contingent in the country.
It is his first trip overseas after being named as defense ministry by the new Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.
There are currently around 1,500 Spanish troops stationed in Afghanistan, where they form part of the United Nations mission in the country. |
