Russia not to soften position on Syria issue
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-02 03:23

Russia will not let the UN Security Council to pass a resolution on Syria if the document was unacceptable for Moscow, Russia's permanent UN envoy Vitaly Churkin said on Wednesday.

"If the text would aggravate the conflict (in Syria), we consider it wrong and will not let it to be adopted. We say this honestly and unequivocally," the diplomat said during a New York- Moscow video link.

He warned that poorly considered resolutions can lead to "a deep regional crisis".

"There can be a chain reaction. This is why Moscow will proceed solely from its own position of principle," Churkin was quoted by Itar-Tass news agency as saying.

He said that Russia supports consensus on the Syria resolution in the UN Security Council because Moscow believes there is still a chance to resolve the Syrian crisis politically.

Moreover, Moscow will not agree to any embargo on arms supplies to Syria, Churkin added.

Moscow insists the UN resolution should take into account the report of the Arab League's mission to Syria, Churkin stressed.

The UN Security Council was debating over the latest draft resolution on Syria, which was jointly drawn up by Arab states with Britain, France and Germany. The Russian representative to the UN said last week that he was "deeply disappointed" with the draft.

Russian Foreign Ministry has said in a statement that Moscow will not back this draft.
