570 fishermen on floating ice brought back to Russia's Sakhalin island
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-01 22:56

A total of 570 people who were stranded on an ice-floe off Russia's far eastern Sakhalin island have been brought back to the coast without casualties, local authorities said Sunday.

According to the regional emergency situations department, some anglers are still staying on the ice-floe and rescuers are continuing their operation to bring them back.

All rescued fishermen were in good conditions with no need to receive medical treatment, the department said.

The ice-floe with anglers off the village of Vzmorye were torn away by winds and sea current on Sunday noon local time. The floe floated away from the coast some 500 to 600 meters, the department said.

Data from Russia's space monitoring showed that the ice-floe virtually stopped drifting to high seas 2.5 hours later, as it ran into solid ice fields.

More than 40 people, 11 boats and two planes have participated in the rescue operation.
