German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she hoped a "strong government" emerges from the Greek general elections in June during a telephone conversation with Greek President Karolos Papoulias on Friday.

Merkel contacted Papoulias ahead of the upcoming EU summit in Brussels next week.

European Parliament President Martin Schulz also paid a visit to the presidential mansion in the Greek capital on Friday.

During a series of talks with Papoulias and Greek party leaders, the social democrat Schulz said "whatever the decision of Greek people in June, we will respect it," in statements broadcast on local television channels.

He expressed dismay at the "lack of adequate dialogue" between Greece and European decision making centres, underlining that it should be made clear that European counterparts aim to assist Greece.

During a meeting with Schulz, chief of the the radical left coalition of SYRIZA Alexis Tsipras said they were concerned with the discussion about the stability of the Greek economy and its future in the eurozone.

"Political forces and speculators play with fire. Greece is and should remain an equal member of the eurozone that has obligations and rights," he said.

Following the May 6 elections, as the second party in parliament, SYRIZA is tipped to win fresh elections next month as a majority in Greece strongly object to painful austerity measures included in the two bailout agreements Athens has signed over the past two years with international lenders to avoid bankruptcy.
