Greek parliament dissolved for new national polls
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-19 17:41

The Greek parliament elected with the May 6 general elections was formally dissolved on Saturday morning, so that new national elections can be held on June 17, according to a presidential decree issued.

Just two days after the 300 deputies were sworn in, the national television broadcaster NET showed a police officer placing the decree on the wall at the entrance of the parliament building in Athens, according to the Greek Constitution, marking the start of the fresh pre- election period.

A caretaker government that was also sworn in on Thursday has been appointed to lead the debt-ridden country to the second round of polls, after parties leaders failure to strike a deal for the formation of a viable coalition government with a full four-year term.

The political turmoil that was added to the country's severe financial woes, has increased anxiety over whether Greece will continue on an austerity and reform program agreed with international lenders since May 2010 in exchange for vital loans to avoid a chaotic default that could have repercussions beyond Greek borders.

The latest opinion polls suggest in particular that anti-austerity and anti-bailout forces gain even more ground amongst frustrated recession-hit voters after the May 6 elections.

Recent surveys over the past week have shown the Radical Left Coalition SYRIZA that seeks a drastic review of bailout terms, leading the race, surpassing this time the conservative New Democracy party frontrunners of the previous electoral battle.

But it seems no party to be securing parliamentary majority in the June elections, as it happened on May 6, all forces will be obliged to seek coalition partnerships again and quickly. Local analysts noted that easing fears of instability could lead to a default and exit from the euro zone.
