German Chancellor Angela Merkel appealed to Greece to form a stable administration as quickly as possible, a government spokesman said on Friday.
In a telephone conversation with Greek President Carolos Papoulias on Friday morning, Merkel urged Greece to establish a long-standing and stable government of its own after the new general election, deputy government spokesman Georg Streiter told a regular news conference in Berlin.
The German government is looking forward to the election outcome, and "it is the wishes of all European partners and also of Germany that a government is formed as quickly as possible after these elections," Streiter said.
Citing the content of the telephone conversation as "confidential," Streiter said Merkel and Papoulias would certainly hold similar conversations in the future regularly, just as they did in the past.
German "citizens expect us to be prepared for every eventuality", the spokesman said in response to the question on whether Germany was fully prepared for a possible withdrawal of Greece form the eurozone. |
