Russia sees ties with Britain improving, thorny issues remain
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-29 11:15

Moscow's relations with Britain have improved significantly in recent times, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.

"There is a substantial progress in our relations, which we would like to develop," Lavrov told reporters after meeting with British Foreign Secretary William Hague.

"We have agreed on regular meetings of our deputies, who will discuss strategic issues, including military-political affairs," Lavrov said.

Meanwhile, the two ministers also discussed the possible launch of reciprocal "Culture Years" in the two countries in 2014 and 2015.

The two ministers also signed a joint communique concerning the Olympic Truce. Moscow and London have agreed to facilitate proliferation of the Olympic truce ideals and to closely cooperate in the field.

Britain will host the Summer Olympics this year while Russia will host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The ministers also exchanged views on a variety of international issues, including Syria, the nuclear program in Iran, and easing of the visa regime between their countries.

"Some time ago we started the possible easing of the visa regime, simplifying the procedure and so on," Lavrov said. "So far we have not advanced along this way."
