Italian gov't wins three confidence votes in parliament
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-14 14:12

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti's government on Wednesday won three confidence votes on an anti-corruption bill in Chamber of Deputies, the lower chamber of the parliament.

A number of 461 deputies voted in favor, 75 against and seven abstained on the bill's article 10, which authorizes the government to decide on whether a convict can or cannot run for election.

Article 13, which redefines various crimes of the penal code, was voted with 431 in favor, 71 against and 38 abstained, while article 14 increasing bribery penalties was passed with 430 in favor, 70 against and 25 abstained.

The anti-corruption bill is now expected to win the lower chamber's final approval on Thursday before being voted in Senate, the upper chamber.

The confidence votes came as Monti stressed in parliament also on Wednesday that Italy did not need any bailout, and the eurozone crisis should lead to "doubled efforts both on the European front and within Italian politics."

On Tuesday, the Italian prime minister sought to reinforce his weakened political support ahead of a series of international meetings before the June 28-29 European Union crucial summit.

In a meeting with the main leaders of his right-left coalition, Monti urged them to support his government so "to overcome the current critical situation and give an image of unity abroad," a statement from the government said.

On Wednesday, the leader of center-right People of Freedom (PdL) party Angelino Alfano said he will continue to support Monti's policies as long as he urges German Chancellor Angela Merkel to accept more growth measures.

The leader of center-left Democratic Party (PD) Pier Luigi Bersani also renewed his backing for Monti's moves, but asked the government to consider pushing back its balanced budget target, currently set for 2013.
