Russia calls for restraint from Syria, Turkey over jet incident
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-27 10:16

Russia was concerned over the jet incident between Syria and Turkey and called on the two sides to observe self-restraint to solve the dispute, the country's Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Tuesday.

In a statement posed on its website, Lukashevich said the jet incident should not be considered as a provocation.

"We think it important not to view this incident as a provocative or deliberate action and it should not lead to destabilization of the situation," Lukashevich said.

"The escalation of political propaganda, including on the international level, is especially dangerous amid efforts to mobilize all major outside players to put the Syrian situation in a political direction through (UN-Arab League joint envoy) Kofi Annan's plan," he said.

Meanwhile, Lukashevich urges all sides, both inside and outside the region, to facilitate the plan and avoid steps exceeding the framework of Annan's peace plan.

"Self-restraint, constructive cooperation of Turkey and Syria in the investigation of details of the incident, and the prevention of similar tragedies in the future would be the optimal courses under these circumstances," he said.

A Turkish Air Force jet crashed into the Mediterranean Sea on Friday after being shot down by Syria, the Turkish premier's office said in a statement on Saturday.

Syrian officials said the jet invaded the country's airspace, while Turkey insisted it was attacked over international waters.
