Russia to put first S-500s in service in 2013
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-28 11:27

Russia will put the first S-500 air defense systems into operation next year, air force chief Viktor Bondarev said Wednesday.

"Russia's missile defense system is fully equipped now. I think we will soon get the S-500 systems in service," said the commander, adding that the air force will also receive several new-generation S-400 Triumf air defense systems annually.

Bondarev told reporters that the new system features a shortened response time of three to four seconds, whereas the previous version's response time is nine to ten seconds.

The S-500 system, with an extended range of up to 600 km, is designed to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles and capable of simultaneously engaging up to 10 targets.

It is expected to outperform Russia's S-400 system and the U.S. Patriot Advanced Capability-3 system.
