Cyprus keeps silent on arrest linked to planned attack on Israeli citizens
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-16 09:02

Cyprus kept silent on reports about arrest linked to a planned attack on Israeli citizens even after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made official comments on the case.

"We should give investigators time to complete their probe", said Justice and Public Order Minister Loucas Louca on Sunday, when pressed by journalists to comment on the Israeli statements.

Netanyahu spoke to his cabinet on Sunday, confirming reports that a Hezbollah member is being detained in Cyprus on suspicion that he planned attacks on Israeli tourists.

Louca also avoided questions about co-operation between Cyprus security officials and Israeli security services.

"Why only with Israel? There has been cooperation with the security services of others countries", Louka said.

Press reports said that Cypriot authorities acted on a tip-off by a foreign security service and arrested a Lebanese 24-year-old man travelling on a Swedish passport on July 8.

He was said to be trailing Israeli tourists in the southern city of Limassol and records of his actions were found in his possession.

The man was originally remanded on custody for five days and later for a further seven days pending completion of the investigation.

Press reports said the man was planning to carry out an attack on Israeli tourists and depart from Cyprus on July 17.
