The European Union (EU) ambassador to Lebanon Angelina Eichhorst asserted Wednesday the EU commitment to the independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Lebanon.

According to a statement issued by the EU representation office in Lebanon, ambassadors of the EU and its member states met Wednesday with Lebanese Prime Minister Nagib Miqati at the Grand Serail.

It added that the discussion focused on the situation in the country and the region, and stressed the importance the EU attaches to Lebanon.

The ambassadors confirmed their "continued commitment to Lebanon's unity, stability, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity," the statement said.

"We discussed the national dialogue revived by (Syrian) President Michel Suleiman which the European Union fully supports. We also stressed the necessity of reinforcing public institutions, including the Lebanese Army, and the need to urgently address the economic and social needs of the Lebanese population," it said.

The EU welcomed the recent payment by Lebanon of its contribution to the budget of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

As for the conditions of Syrians who are fleeing the violence in their country and the situation on the Lebanese borders, "the European Union strongly condemns the incursions and security incidents along the border with Syria," it said.
