Belarus's two main opposition parties have withdrawn their candidates from this weekend's parliamentary election, complaining about the detainment of political prisoners and election fraud.
The Belarussian election commission confirmed Tuesday that the United Civic Party and the Belarussian National Front have removed the names of their candidates.
"Two political parties that have withdrawn their candidates have failed to provide this information to the district election commissions on time, all of which caused technical problems," Lidia Yermoshina, the Central Election Commission chairperson, told reporters.
Anatoly Lebedko, leader of the United Civic Party, said Monday that its candidates were prepared to run in the election only if early voting was scrapped and authorities released political prisoners.
"None of this happened, and it only got worse," Lebedko said. |
