Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-11-26 23:48

At least 14 people were killed on Monday in a fire at a workshop for people with disabilities in the Black Forest of southern Germany.

Police said the fire broke out at about 14:00 local time (1300 GMT), injuring seven other people at the workshop in the town Titisee-Neustadt of Baden-Wurttemberg state.

Investigations are underway on the cause of the fire. Local media said it was caused by an explosion in a storage room. A police spokesperson from nearby Freiburg said the death toll could still rise.

Firefighters and rescue workers gathered from neighboring regions and managed to rescue almost everyone in the building, local media said, adding that smoke did not cease until one hour after the fire was extinguished.

The woodwork and metalwork workshop has 120 employees with mental or physical disabilities, local media said.

Police have asked those who were at the scene when the fire broke out to identify themselves, as 50 of the employees were in the building when the accident occurred.
