Last Updated(Beijing Time):2013-01-12 17:37

A freight train derailed Saturday in Russia's Irkutsk region in Siberia, killing two people, authorities said.

The accident occurred at 05:10 Moscow time (0110 GMT) when the train loaded with coal derailed and collided with an oncoming locomotive, the regional emergency department said.

An operator and his assistant at the locomotive died. Four electric transmission lines supporting both directions were damaged.

Three passenger trains were delayed in the region because of the accident, the Itar-Tass news agency quoted the East Siberian Railway company as saying. Three repair trains have been sent to the site.

The cause of the accident was a defect of the frame of one of the cars, the company said.

Russian Interior Ministry's transport police and the regional police department are investigating the accident.
