Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti on Thursday called for growth-oriented policies at the European Union-level and said Italy was actively pushing for it.

"I believe no individual countries in Europe, not even the largest ones, can really keep a momentum for growth or resume a momentum for growth unless the EU policies are more oriented towards growth," said Monti at the ongoing World Economic Forum (WEF).

At a session titled "Eurozone Crisis - the way forward," he argued that Italy was pushing for the adoption of growth pacts and insisted the single market be worked on more seriously.

"We all know that Europe is based on the single market," he said, adding that there wasn't really a single market for energy, digital and other services.

Monti added that to revive growth, "each of us also has to do things domestically."

"In spite of or maybe helped by the pressures of financial emergency," Italy has begun to inject openness and competition in the markets, he said.

"This is something that is totally in line with the EU inspiration of a social market economy," he said, citing examples such as securing public finances in the longer term and tough pension reform.
