Austria is currently experiencing its least pleasant spring in 69 years as far as weather temperatures and sunshine are concerned, the Kronen Zeitung newspaper reported Wednesday.

Weather forecasts for Vienna indicate April 7 will be the 17th consecutive day of temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, a record low for the Austrian capital for this time of year.

"Even if the amounts of snow are not particularly large, this result is very unusual for Vienna," said Alexander Orlik of the Central Institution for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG).

The only other years when spring temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius were recorded for 16 consecutive days were 1906 and 1944, Orlik added.

The situation runs against the usual trend of earlier springs, with the ZAMG saying the tendency since the mid-1980s has been for spring to arrive five days earlier with each passing decade.

Another record low for Vienna was the amount of sunshine hours sunshine in the city, with a total of only 206 hours for the first quarter of 2013. Experts suggest people should engage in activities to fight off the clinically-proven depressive effects dull and gloomy weather can cause, the Kronen Zeitung report said.
