Government members will have to declare their assets to the public by April 15, the French prime minister's office said in a statement Monday.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault also promised to present a bill on financial transparency of government officials to the ministers' council by April 24, before it is submitted to parliament for adoption in the summer.

The decision came as the embattled government seeks to regain trust of the French after the nation was shocked by the former Budget Minister Jerome Cahuzac's tax fraud scandal.

Cahuzac acknowledged a week ago the holding of a bank account abroad for 20 years after having repeatedly denied the same for the past four months. The revelation of his lying has heavily tarnished the image of the Socialist government and damaged the image of President Francois Hollande and his cabinet.

In response to the crisis, the prime minister prepared a series of measures to "ensure complete transparency on the assets of politicians and staff working with ministers, the president and the prime ministers, and to more severely punish breaches of the financial law, ethics and integrity rules, and to strengthen the fight against tax evasion and tax havens," the official statement said.
