Death toll in the hurricane that battered northern Germany has reached six as heavy rain and high winds continue, causing widespread rail and air traffic disruption.

On Monday, four people were killed in Germany in separate accidents that involved falling trees, local media reported. A sailor died in a lake near Cologne on Sunday and a fisherman drowned near the city when his boat capsized in heavy waves.

The country's railway operator closed train service in the state of Schleswig-Holstein due to the extreme weather condition on Monday afternoon, while airports in Duesseldorf and Hamburg canceled many flights, stranding more than 1,000 passengers.

National weather services said more rain will hit southern parts of the country and strong winds will move inland from the northern coast on Monday night, with rain and wind continuing throughout the week in many parts of the country.

The hurricane that tore across northern Europe has claimed at least 13 deaths in Germany, Britain, the Netherlands and Denmark.
