Avalanche warning issued for pre-Olympics Sochi
Avalanches might threaten the subtropical resort of Sochi, venue of the upcoming Winter Olympic Games, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said Tuesday.
"Avalanches could cause blackouts, disruption of communications, housing services and transportation," the ministry's Krasnodar regional subdivision said in a statement.
On Saturday, when the opening ceremony for the Olympics skiing and snowboarding venue Rosa Khutor is scheduled in the Sochi's mountain cluster, the weather there might become warmer, the forecast said.
The experts warned this terrain receives extreme precipitation that can lead to large and dangerous avalanche cycles.
The 22nd Winter Olympics are slated for Feb. 7-23 with 98 sets of medals to be contested.
