Slovakia won't increase its defence budget in the next few years, despite the military tension in neighboring Ukraine, Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Slovak Radio, reported by local news agency TASR on Sunday.
According to Fico, Slovakia at the moment doesn't have enough resources to increase the percentage of GDP spent on defence. The current 1 percent of GDP may be somewhat increased, but no significant hike is realistic, stressed Fico.
"I'm interested to see a small professional military, which will be adequately armed," said Fico, adding that current tasks for a military are different from those 30 years ago.
"There's a major geopolitical dispute on Ukraine. We'll always promote the use of political tools and not that of military and economic ones to resolve the crisis in Ukraine," said the prime minister.
