Germany said Monday that referendums held in Ukraine's eastern regions on their future status were illegal and would not recognize their outcome, according to reports of German television channel ARD.
Steffen Seibert, spokesman of the German government, said Sunday's referendums in two regions of eastern Ukraine "violated the country's constitution" and Germany would not recognize their results.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told reporters before a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels that the vote was illegal, saying "the referendums can not and should not be taken seriously."
The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) will start a national dialogue on Wednesday in Kiev, ARD reported, citing sources from German Foreign Ministry.
Referendums on self-rule were held in eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Lugansk on Sunday. Organizers reported an overwhelmingly vote in favor of independence from Ukraine.
Ukrainian authorities and some Western countries denounced the controversial referendums as illegal.
Russia said Monday that it respects the choice of people in Donetsk and Lugansk regions, while hoping implementation of the referendum results to be processed along civilized lines.
