Russian President Vladimir Putin urged the federal government to help accommodating Ukrainian refugees in different regions on Wednesday.

He asked the cabinet to think how to help the refugees as well as the Russian regions, since the spiking refugee inflow brings more difficulties to regional governments.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak said that the border regions with Ukraine are carrying the most burdens, with 271 temporary refugee camps set up.

He added that Russia has simplified the rules of granting temporary shelter for refugees.

Moreover, Kozak suggested to provide special monetary allowances to people with official refugee status. The proposals would be presented by next Monday, he said at the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations and regional governments have jointly worked to help the refugees, spokesman of Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said Tuesday.

The total number of Ukrainian refugees staying in temporary accommodation sites in Russia exceeds 14,000, while statistics released last Thursday showed he number of refugees who had fled from Ukraine to Russia exceeded 18,900, according to the ministry.
