The number of homeless immigrants to major Swedish cities from the European Union (EU) has doubled, according to the Stockholm Social Services Agency, Swedish Radio reported Monday.

Many of the immigrants come from Romania. But more than 60 percent have residency permits to live in EU countries are citizens from developing countries, such as Nigeria, Ghana and Morocco.

Gisela Bergfors, who is part of the group in Stockholm dealing with homeless immigrants, said that Swedes are not as tolerant of immigrants as they have been.

"It's a little disturbing that people have had enough and won't accept anymore," she said.

"I don't think people have anywhere near the same understanding that they had previously," she added.

She said that the agency does not have exact statistics, but estimates the number of homeless immigrants has doubled based on the number of cases the agency is now handling.

In major Swedish cities, social services agencies attempt to find housing for homeless immigrants. They and various volunteer organizations also run day-shelters where the homeless can get food, wash their clothes and find shelter.

Separately, Swedish Radio reported Monday that the number of those seeking aslyum in the EU reached a record in 2013. According to the European Asylum Support Office, 435,760 people asked for asylum in 2013, 12 percent of them in Sweden.
