The Spanish nursing auxiliary, who on Monday was confirmed as the first person to have contracted the deadly Ebola virus outside of Africa, is in stable condition, it was confirmed early on Tuesday.

The 44-year-old nurse contracted the virus while treating Ebola patient Manuel Garcia Viejo, a Spanish missionary who died of the illness at Carlos III hospital in Madrid on Sept. 25.

The nurse, who went on holiday after Garcia's death, originally checked herself into a hospital in Alcorcon in the south of the city. She was transferred to Carlos III hospital Tuesday morning. The coordinator of the center for alerts and emergencies for Spain's health ministry, Fernando Simon, confirmed the nurse's condition was "stable," with "no immediate risk" and that she was "relatively calm."

Speaking on Spanish radio, Simon said that he had proposed the isolation of people who could have been in contact with the patient, who began to show symptoms of the virus on Sept. 30, as a "precautionary measure." This was also as a response to the "social alarm," which the case has caused.

He explained the health ministry is currently working on an exhaustive list of everyone the nurse has been in contact with over the past six days. Those on the list will need to be isolated and undergo tests for 21 days. The nurse' husband has already been put in isolation, Simon confirmed.

"It would be very innocent of us to think there is no capacity for the transmission of the virus. It is obvious it exists, although it is very low," said Simon.

Meanwhile investigations are ongoing to discover how the nurse, who is presumably followed the relevant protocols while treating Garcia, became infected.
