Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaite, during a visit to the training site of the joint NATO military exercise Iron Sword 2014 on Thursday, said the exercise would enhance regional security.

"This exercise is good proof that NATO is placing special focus on our security and taking concrete measures to ensure it," she said in a statement.

"Just as other NATO countries, we in Lithuania are ready to face challenges, or sometimes unpredictable neighbors," Grybauskaite was quoted by BNS news agency as saying to journalists in Pabrade, a town in Eastern Lithuania, where she observed the military exercises.

Iron Sword 2014 was attended by nine NATO member states and involved around 2,500 military personnel and 300 vehicles. The military exercises began on Nov. 2 and was officially ended Thursday.

"These exercises are really exceptional. It's good that NATO allies understand the importance of such trainings, and they quickly responded to the invitation to attend and train in Lithuania," said Major General Almantas Leika, Commander of the Lithuanian Land force, in a statement.

The exercises in Lithuania were held after a NATO decision taken during a summit in Wales to increase its presence and strengthen security in Eastern Europe.
