The family of Delhi gang rape victim Thursday lodged a strong protest with the BBC for making public of their daughter's name in its documentary on the sensational crime and has warned of taking legal action in this connection.

"Despite clearly telling them not to make the name and photo of our daughter public, they have gone ahead with it and this is not right...we will take legal action against this," the father of the victim told the media from his home in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.

The BBC broadcast the documentary on Wednesday night despite opposition of the Indian government.

India has banned the film in which its maker Leslee Udwin had an interview with one of the six rapists of the December 2012 gang rape in a heavy security jail in Delhi.

In the documentary, entitled "India's Daughter", Mukesh Singh, one of the four rapists on death row, displayed an appalling lack of remorse and went to the extent of even blaming the woman for the rape.

In the Delhi gang rape, six men brutally raped a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in south Delhi. The victim later died of internal injuries.
