Former Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta has been placed under court supervision for 60 days for being involved in an alledged corruption case relating to a visit by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

According to a press release from Romania's National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA), Ponta was accused of using his influence or authority for ill-gotten gains for himself and others and for being an accomplice to money laundering.

Ponta has allegedly used his authority as leader of a political party to help a businessman win a seat in parliament and a term in Romania's Chamber of Deputies.

The businessman allegedly paid 220,000 euros(247,643.91 U.S. dollars) to cover former British Prime Minister Tony Blair's cost during a visit to Romania in 2012.

"What was being sought was that by touting a meeting with an internationally acclaimed personality, Ponta would gain electoral capital in the local and parliamentary elections in 2012," said DNA in the press release.

During the 60-day court supervision, Ponta is not allowed to leave the country without the approval of the supervising prosecutor, or to make comments on the case and relevant prosecutors.

Victor Ponta served as Romania's Prime Minister between May 2012 and November 2015. He is a member of the Social Democratic Party and its leader from 2010 to 2015.
