Three firefighters suffered light burn injuries on Thursday while battling a raging wildfire in the seaside resort of Lagonissi, some 40 km southeast of Athens, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

Dozens of firemen were deployed in the area trying to put out the blaze which broke out early afternoon, according to the local Fire Service. They are assisted by fire engines and at least two water dropping helicopters.

The flames have scorched mainly low vegetation, but due to the strong winds blowing in the area they spread quickly close to two residential zones which were evacuated as a precaution measure due to smoke, according to AMNA.

It was not clear which was the cause of Thursday's fire, but it was the second time in a week Lagonissi faces a wildfire.

On Wednesday and Thursday throughout Greece at least 39 wildfires broke out and most of them were contained within a few hours, the Fire Brigade said.

Greece suffers from scores of destructive wildfires each summer due to scorching temperatures or arson. In the worst wildfires tragedy 10 years ago, also the worst in recent decades, over 80 people died as dozens of large wildfires raged across Greece.

Three weeks ago a fireman who was seriously injured battling a fire near Corinth, 80 km southwest of Athens, died in hospital.
