On behalf of the Dutch government, Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Foreign Minister Bert Koenders on Friday respectively expressed their condolences to the victims of the terror attacks in Spain.

Rutte described the incident as "a cowardly attack on innocent people," saying "a black day in a place where many people from all over the world meet. Our thoughts are with the many victims and injured. We are following the events and the Netherlands is ready to help."

Koenders conveyed his condolences to his Spanish counterpart Alfonso Dastis, saying "the Ramblas, the world-famous promenade in the heart of the city, has been transformed into a place of mourning. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in close contact with the Spanish authorities and hospitals in Barcelona."

The Ministry also confirmed that three Dutch citizens were injured during the attack in Barcelona on Thursday night, in which 13 people were killed and 100 more injured. The three injured Dutch people were transferred to a hospital, and are out of danger.

The Dutch National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV) announced that it is closely monitoring the situation in Spain. However, according to the NCTV, there is no reason to raise the threat level in the Netherlands so far.

The terrorist threat level in the Netherlands has been at level 4 on a scale of 5 since March 2013. That means the chance of an attack in the Netherlands is real, but that there are no specific indications that terrorists are preparing to carry out an attack in the Netherlands.
