Hamas, PNA dispute on Quartet meeting due in Amman on resuming talks
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-02 20:32

The Islamic Hamas movement and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Monday disputed on a meeting of the International Quartet for peace in the Middle East due to be held in Amman Tuesday, where Israeli and Palestinian officials will hold bilateral talks.

Hamas spokesman in Gaza Sami Abu Zuhri slammed the meetings and told Xinhua that Hamas considers the meeting a resumption of the direct talks between Palestinians and Israeli "occupation."

"We call on the PNA to regret its decision and boycott any further meetings in the future," he said.

However, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told reporters in Ramallah that the Palestinian-Israeli meeting in Amman Tuesday will only discuss the possibility of resuming the stalled peace talks. "This does not mean that the peace negotiations are resumed," he added.

"These meetings are a repetition of a track that had failed over the past years," said Abu Zuhri, who called on the PNA to stop bargaining on the rule of the Quartet. He claimed that the United States "is controlling the committee and uses it only to serve the Israeli occupation's interests."

Erekat expressed hope that Israel would respond to the Jordanian and international calls to announce the halt of settlement construction in the West Bank and Jerusalem and accept the two-state solution to give a chance for the resumption of the Middle East peace talks.

Palestinian and Israeli peace negotiators will meet Tuesday in the Jordanian capital of Amman to discuss the possibility of reviving direct talks. The meeting will be held under the auspices of Jordan and the Quartet Committee, which compresses the U.S., the United Nations, the European Union and Russia.
