Hamas, PNA dispute on Quartet meeting due in Amman on resuming talks
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-02 20:32

Direct American-mediated peace negotiations between Israel and the PNA stopped in October 2010 four weeks after they started in Washington. Palestinians and Israelis are required to resume peace negotiations before the end of a deadline set by the Quartet ends on Jan. 26.

The foreign ministry of Jordan said in an earlier statement that there will be two meetings in Amman Tuesday, adding that Israeli and Palestinian negotiators as well as representatives of the Quartet will be attending.

"The two meetings are aimed at reaching a joint ground to resume the direct talks between the Israeli and Palestinian sides, " said the statement, adding "these talks aim at finalizing a peace deal that manifests the two-state solution and treats the issues of the permanent status."

The Palestinians are attempting to resume peace negotiations before the end of a deadline set by the Quartet ends on Jan. 26.

Meanwhile, the central committee of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah Party stressed earlier that there would be no peace talks unless Israel agrees to set references for the peace process, recognize the two-state solution and halt its settlement activities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

"The next period is decisive and dangerous," spokesman for the Fatah central committee, Nabil Abu Rdeneh, said in a press statement after a meeting chaired by President Mahmoud Abbas Sunday. Abu Rdeneh held Israel responsible for the impasse in the peace process.

He stressed that the Palestinian people will never abandon their rights, and that President Abbas has informed the members of the central committee on the efforts made by the international Quartet for peace and Jordan to push the peace process forward.

Yasser Abed Rabbo, secretary of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), told the official Palestinian Radio that the Jan. 26 deadline could be the last chance for the international efforts to resume the talks.

"We do not expect too much. The quartet members themselves don' t expect positive results to restart talks," said Abed Rabbo.
