Solidarity among citizens after fatal explosion in Syrian capital
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-07 00:14

Hundreds of citizens on Friday gathered near a police station in the al-Midan neighborhood in western the Syrian capital of Damascus, showing their solidarity and support with the Syrian government, a couple of hours after a suicide bombing rocked the area and left at least 25 people dead and 63 wounded.

Witnesses told Xinhua that the powerful explosion hit at about 10:55 a.m. local time (GMT 0855) on Friday, after a suicide bomber blew himself up at a traffic light under the South Bridge, where a police station and the Hassan al-Hakeen Basic Education School are nearby.

The dead included civilians, as well as a number of policemen, who were at that time changing shifts near the police station.

Local media reports said that the police station might be the target of the attack.

One of the citizens, who was holding a portrait of President Bashar al-Assad and chanting pro-government slogans despite the aftermaths of the bloody attack, said "we were certainly not afraid of their (the terrorists') tricks."

The man, requiring anonymity, said that the attack was surely plotted by some "evil forces" against the Syrian government. His opinion was echoed by a number of his fellow demonstrators, as well as a man in police uniform, who called the act "terrorism" in essence.

Only meters away from the crowd was the "No Entry" line set up by the policemen shortly after the explosion, which had destroyed nearly ten cars, including two buses and four wagons belonging to the police station, and smashed almost all the windows of the five- floor police station building into pieces.

Smudges of blood and even pieces of the remains of the dead could be seen on the other side of the guard line, while inside the destroyed buses were some helmets and shields with the printing of "Police."

While the official SANA news agency called the attack a " terrorist" one, head of the opposition National Coordination Body Hasan Abdul-Azim also said it was an "appalling crime," but he could not accuse any party at the present stage.

The city of Damascus has beefed up its security inspections and the policemen and the army members have set up extra road checks after Friday's blast, which is the second deadly attack in the Syrian capital since the eruption of protests against the government in March of 2011.

Two weeks ago, twin suicide bombings targeting two intelligence centers rocked Damascus, leaving at least 44 people dead and 166 others injured, a day after the first batch of Arab League (AL) observers arrived in Syria to assess whether the country was abiding by an Arab peace plan to end crackdown on protesters.
