Syria slams U.S. statement on Arab observer mission as "flagrant intervention"
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-04 23:18

The Syrian foreign ministry on Wednesday deplored the U.S. statement on the Arab League (AL) observer mission as a "flagrant intervention" and an attempt to " unwarrantedly" internationalize the Syrian crisis.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told a news briefing on Tuesday that "the Syrian regime has not lived up to the full spectrum of commitments that it made to the Arab League when it accepted its proposal some nine weeks ago... For example, the violence hasn't stopped. Far from it."

In an official statement, Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said Wednesday that "the U.S. statement is a provocative stance that would hurt the performance of the Arab observers even before the issuance of their first report."

"The U.S. is not part of the deal between the AL and Syria, but rather a part in the process of raising and inciting violence," Makdissi said.

Syria's state-run SANA news agency said Wednesday that the Arab observers continued their work for the eighth consecutive day in several areas across Syria, giving no further details.

Syria signed the AL observer deal on Dec. 19 in Cairo after the AL threatened to refer the Syrian crisis to the United Nations Security Council. According to the deal, dozens of Arab observers have been sent to violent-hit areas in Syria since late December for a month-long mission.

An AL ministerial committee on Syria has decided to meet on Saturday to discuss the first report submitted by the observer mission. The meeting, to be held at the AL headquarters in Cairo, will talk about the latest developments in Syria and new measures to be adopted.
