PLO official threatens of civil disobedience against Israel
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-11 21:44

A senior official of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) threatened on Wednesday of going for civil disobedience against Israel, in the hope of prompting the world to make serious efforts to end the Israeli occupation.

"Declaring comprehensive civil disobedience would end with international intervention" to stop clashes between Palestinians and Israelis, Tayseer Khaled told "Voice of Palestine" radio.

Khaled, who is also a member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), stressed that the level of ties between Palestinians and Israeli government must be downgraded until the civil disobedience is carried out.

Israel has been occupying the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip since 1967. In 2005, it evacuated its 20 Jewish settlement and pulled out from the Gaza Strip, which was violently taken over by Hamas movement in 2007.

"The move of civil disobedience against Israel has to be followed by intensive Palestinian diplomatic activities, mainly in the United Nations, and sending fact-finding groups to investigate Israel's violations," said Khaled.

The PLO decided to go for direct peace talks with Israel to end decades of conflicts. However, the direct talks were suspended after Israel refused to halt settlement activities and security measures against Palestinians.

Israeli-Palestinian peace meetings were renewed in Jordan last week. However, the Palestinians, who presented their vision on resolving the issues of borders and security to the Israeli side, sounded not optimistic.

Ashrawi earlier denied that the meetings in Jordan would be considered as a resumption of talks as long as Israel still refuses to halt settlement construction and recognize the principle of the two-state solution according to 1967 borders.
