AL urges Syrian president to delegate power to deputy
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-23 05:33

The Arab League (AL) on Sunday urged Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to delegate his first vice president power to deal with a national unity government.

In a resolution adopted after a meeting of foreign ministers, the AL called upon Syria to form a national unity government within two months with the participation of the oppositions, aiming to implement the Arab solution and prepare for free presidential and parliamentary elections under the supervision of Arab countries as well as the international society.

The resolution also asked the Syrian government to prepare a draft constitution to be approved through a popular referendum, urging al-Assad to delegate his first deputy with full powers to enable the national unity government to act in the transitional period.

According to the resolution, the national unity government should regain security and stability in Syria, reorganize the police system to preserve and enhance social order, and call all Arab countries to support the new unity government in accordance with the AL.

Meanwhile, the resolution calls the new government to establish an independent institution to investigate all violations faced by Syrian citizens.
