Head of AL observer mission in Syria asks for grace period
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-22 21:59

Head of the Arab League (AL) observer mission in Syria Moustafa al-Dabi asked for one more month for the mission to complete its duty in Syrian cities, an Arab League official told Xinhua on Sunday.

Dabi's remarks came after a closed-door meeting held by the Arab ministerial committee on the Syrian crisis in Cairo to discuss the final report about the mission's performance in Syria.

"They discussed the report and achievements the observers have got during the meeting. After that Dabi asked to give his team one more month to complete their mission in Syria," said the official who required anonymity.

The meeting was chaired by Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani and attended by foreign ministers of Egypt, Sudan, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, as well as AL chief Nabil al-Arabi.

Syria signed the AL observer protocol on Dec. 19, 2011 in Cairo after the AL threatened to take the issue to the United Nations Security Council.

The AL observers are monitoring the situation in Syria as part of the AL peace initiative to end the months-long turmoil in Syria.
