Turkey, Qatar oppose military strikes on Iran
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-06 05:54

Ministers from Turkey and Qatar dismissed on Sunday a proposal of attacking Iran for its nuclear program, saying that a war would only lead to chaos in the region and all sides should dedicate themselves to serious dialogues.

Speaking at a panel discussion at the annual Munich Security Conference, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the worst option to solve the Iran nuclear issue is military actions, while the best is through diplomatic contacts and dialogues.

"A military option will be a disaster in our region, so before that disaster, everybody must be serious about negotiations," he said.

"If there is strong political will and mutual confidence being established, this issue could be resolved in a few days," he added.

Khaled al-Attiyah, Qatar's minister for international cooperation, also told the audience, mostly high-level security officials and diplomats from Europe and America, that military strikes is not a solution, from his experiences living in the region.

He said that "tightening the embargo on Iran will make the scenario worse. I believe we should have dialogue .. our allies and friends in the West should open a serious dialogue with the Iranians to get out of this dilemma."

The United States and the European Union has imposed the toughest sanctions ever on Iran last month, asking for more transparency for Iran's ongoing nuclear program, which the West believed is a cover used by Iran for its nuclear weapon experiments. Iran has insisted that its nuclear work is purely for peaceful, energy and medical purposes.

On Saturday also in Munich conference, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said "Europe is not willing to allow for a nuclear armed Iran", based on a conviction that "a nuclear armed Iran is not only a danger to the security of that region, but is a danger to the whole world."

Moreover, he said Europe is keeping a close eye on possible escalation on this issue.

The European Union's goal is "to avoid a military conflict," he said.

On Sunday, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps' (IRGC) ground forces Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour told local satellite Press TV that Iran would never be the initiator of any war, but its response to any threat or aggression will be crushing.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi said that Tehran was preparing itself to counter all the Western plans aimed at mounting pressure on the Islamic republic.
