Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Tuesday that the European Union (EU)'s embargo on Iran's oil exports to its member states will hit the European people.

"I think more than anybody else this is for the loss of the European people," the spokesman told reporters in his weekly press briefing.

Asking the European officials not to surrender to the U.S. pressures on Iran, Mehmanparast said that to enter the political games and to give in to the U.S. pressures will endanger the security and welfare of the European people.

Earlier this month, EU leaders endorsed fresh restrictive sanction measures on Iran's oil exports, which was adopted by the bloc's foreign ministers.

On Jan. 23, the EU foreign ministers decided to embargo Iran's oil and related products, causing investors' worry about the global oil supplies as Tehran had threatened in retaliation to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping lane for the trade.

Major EU importers of Iran's oil, such as Greece, Italy and Spain, have to find alternative oil suppliers until July 1, when the embargo comes into force.
