Iranian lawmakers summon president to parliament for questioning
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-08 16:29

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been summoned to the Iranian Majlis (parliament) to answer questions about a number of domestic and international policies by his administration, the local satellite Press TV reported Wednesday.

The motion has been signed by over 70 lawmakers, who said they wanted Ahmadinejad to appear before the Majlis and answer a number of questions about his administration's policies, as well as the appointment and removal of key officials.

Deputy Majlis Speaker Mohammad-Reza Bahonar read out the text of the motion during an open session of the Majlis on Tuesday, saying that the president will appear before the parliament to answer the questions by mid-March, according to the report.

In the past years, some Iranian lawmakers put forward at intervals a number of motions meant to summon the president to the Majlis for the same purpose but later withdrew from their calls for political considerations.

Observers believe that the new motion raised by the conservative lawmakers is linked to the rivalry in the upcoming parliamentary elections between the president and the conservative hard-liners.

The forthcoming Majlis election is slated for March 2, when over 3,000 qualified individuals will compete for the 290-seat legislative institution.
