The leader of Hezbollah, Lebanon's Shiite armed group, on Tuesday reiterated his support to embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the face of Western and Israeli efforts to topple him.
Hezbollah Secretary General Hasan Nasrallah defended Assad's handling of the Syrian crisis, citing the reforms he has launched and his readiness to have dialogue with the opposition.
Nasrallah also said it is never too late to carry out talks between the opposing groups.
"Whoever is keen on preserving (stability) in Syria would never say that it is too late, but would instead launch dialogue without any prior conditions," Nasrallah said in a televised speech during a Hezbollah rally in southern Beirut.
The Hezbollah chief said there are collaborative efforts by the West, Israel and some Arab countries, referring to the Gulf Corporation Council, aiming to end Assad's rule. He said these efforts are not in the interest of the Syrian people. |
