Palestinians to give Israel 3 weeks to respond to peace talks messages
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-15 23:03

Palestinians will give Israel three weeks to respond to their upcoming messages on peace talks resumption before taking other steps, a Palestinian official said on Wednesday.

Within a week, the Palestinian leadership will send its messages to Israel, asking the Jewish country to recognize the two- state solution, halt its settlement activities in the West Bank and east Jerusalem and release the Palestinian prisoners.

"The Israeli government will have three weeks to respond to our messages before we take alternative steps," said Saeb Erekat, a senior Palestinian negotiator.

The Palestinian-Israeli negotiations broke down in 2010 over a dispute on Israel's settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, where the Palestinians wish to build their future capital.

According to Erekat, the Palestinians' options are open, including continuing their bid to gain recognition by the United Nations.

The negotiator ruled out any success of the international efforts so far regarding the revival of the peace talks and accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of "destroying the two-state solution based on the 1967 borderlines."

On Sunday, Abbas told the Arab League's ministerial meeting that he will send messages to Israel to define the references for the peace process.

On Monday, sources said the Palestinian leadership will consider working to upgrade its United Nations status to a non- member observer state if Israel responds negatively to their messages.
