Israeli PM's bureau chief to resign after admitting to sexual harassment
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-20 05:33

Natan Eshel, an official from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's bureau, on Sunday signed a plea bargain admitting to "unbecoming conduct" after harassing a female co-worker.

Eshel will resign from his post as bureau chief at Netanyahu's office at the end of the month after a plea bargain was signed between his attorney and Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein.

Eshel was accused of taking pictures of a sexual nature of a female staffer, stalking her and accessing her computer.

Under the agreement, Eshel will not be able to work again in any position within the civil service.

Netanyahu on Sunday praised Eshel's work and "important contribution to the successful work of the Israeli government."

The investigation, which began last month, was carried by the Civil Service Commission and took into consideration the testimonies of 28 witnesses.

The female employee, known as R, did not cooperate with the investigation and did not wish to be interrogated by Weinstein, local media reported.

Eshel issued a statement to the media, regretting the whole affair.

"In retrospect, it is clear to me that I was dragged into too high a level of awareness in the affairs of the office's employee and that I should have avoided that," the statement read.

It is not the first time in recent years that sexual harassment charges bring down senior Israeli officials. Former Israeli President Moshe Katsav was jailed last year after being convicted of rape and sexual harassment. Katsav was sentenced to seven years in prison, in a case that dragged on for five years until a tribunal found him guilty in December 2010.
